Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one that is given to her on the account of her appearing in a grotto in Lourdes to a fourteen year old girl, Bernadette. Bernadette lived in a poor family that was spiritually lukewarm family. They had lost their money due to a financial crisis in Lourdes. They were forced to move to a small home that was formerly a dungeon in a prison. Bernadette and her siblings would go and gather scrap materials around the country to sell to help support the family. It was on one such of these occasions that Bernadette encountered a beautiful young lady. The young lady held a rosary and spoke no words to Bernadette, and neither did Bernadette speak to her either. Bernadette could see the young lady was praying the Rosary for the young lady was stringing the rosary beads, but she was not speaking. Bernadette was inspired to start praying a Rosary, and once she had finished, the young lady disappeared. Bernadette came back a second time to the grotto and the young lady appeared again. This time the Bernadette came up to the young lady and sprinkled holy water on her. Bernadette then prayed the Rosary again, and at the end of the Rosary the young lady disappeared.

These apparitions, eighteen in total, occured througout the rest of the year. On the ninth, Our Lady told Bernadette to drink a fountain in the grotto to which Bernadette did not understand, for there was no fountain. Our Lady then told her to dig under a rock, and suddenly a fountain sprang forth. It has been confirmed by science that the spring did not exist before it sprang forth. This fountain has healed countless amounts of people who visit it in Lourdes. On the eighteenth, the girl revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception.
